Inter Faith Week - Pilgrimage Together
Published date: 15th December 2010
On a Sunday morning as part of the recent Inter Faith Week activities Trinity Community Church based in Moss Side joined to share with the Farghana Institute from Whalley Range in learning from each other’s worship traditions and sharing discussion together.
The theme of pilgrimage provided an opportunity to learn about the Hajj pilgrimage from members of the mosque who had travelled to Makkah (Mecca) in previous years. Each stage of the Hajj was described and how this helped the pilgrim to become a more faithful Muslim in today’s world.

The wreath brought by the church helps it’s members to focus on a different Bible theme each week during Advent. It was explained that candles of different colours in the wreath represent Peace, Justice, Joy and Salvation as we wait God’s coming again in Jesus at Christmas. An advent calendar was given to everyone, with a reading for each day, as a way of journeying together during this holy time. A large cake was cut and food shared as further animated talking about faith journeys took place over lunch. The church and mosque are exploring the possibility of a twinning arrangement, suggested by the Christian – Muslim Forum, as a way of getting to know each other and working together to show that different faith groups can learn and co-operate with each other.
This event built on a similar occasion in Peace Week in March 2010 when the two congregations explored their own attitudes to peace making and the wider global need for peace in conflict situations. Other events are planned with the help of a Faith in Action grant.
Revd Bob Day
Minister, United Reformed Church, Moss Side
